About the Author

I am Dr Michael J. (Mike) Watts. I completed my PhD in computational intelligence in the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago in 2004. The topic of my PhD was Evolving Connectionist Systems.

From 2000 to 2004, while working on my PhD, I taught data processing and computational intelligence in the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago. Some of the lectures I presented are available here.

From 2004 to 2007 I was a post-doctoral fellow in the National Centre for Advanced Bioprotection Technologies (now the Bio-Protection Research Centre) at Lincoln University, New Zealand, where I developed intelligent methods for predicting the invasion and distribution of invasive insect crop pests. From 2007 to 2009 I was a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Sydney, where I again applied intelligent methods to predicting the distribution of the Australian plague locust. I worked in the Global Ecology Lab at the University of Adelaide from January 2010 to August 2012.

I am currently the Academic Head of Programme for Information Technology at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS) in Auckland, New Zealand.

I have written or contributed to more than 70 publications in the field of computational intelligence and ecological modelling.
